GOODBYE, FUTURE US!

AFTER BURNER

There's this song by Kouku-Densi which has, like, totally enchanted me lately.

The band are a picopico-New Wave band. Really fun music and their theme is avionics which is... curious. They want to be aeroplane engineers. But I think that's a good goal because nobody wants a real job these days.

This isn't a page about the band specifically, though, or else it would be sitting on my other network, picopico.org!

This page's subject is track 06 on the 2008 album AFTER BURNER, titled Mirai no Bokura; a fun title which translates to something along the lines of The Future Us.

I'd heard it in a live recording before, but when this sort of music has a studio recording, you get such lovely things as vocoders and autotune sprucing up the vocals, making them sound distant and robotic and dreamy at once, and everyone else is at their best, and oh is it a good song!

Admittedly, my Japanese is rustier than that nail X JAPAN were talking about, so I can't get a grasp on all the lyrics... but the stuff I (think that I) can understand is just so fun.

Take the chorus, which is really what's gripped me most of all:

何をやってたんだろう? 何を待ってたんだろう?
What were we doing? What were we waiting for?
何を切ってたんだろう? 何を欲しがったんだろう?
What were we cutting off? What were we even wanting?

さよなら未来の僕ら さよなら未来の僕ら
Goodbye, our future selves Goodbye, our future selves
さよなら未来の僕ら ありがとうこれまでの僕ら
Goodbye, our future selves Thank you, our past selves

I don't even fully get what story Norihiko Tada, the guitarist who wrote and composed this song, is trying to tell here. I mean, the chorus itself gives you a pretty incomplete idea, doesn't it?

The sentence that last line belongs to is even finished in the middle, but I guess that today I want to focus on the chorus. Please take a listen to it. It was kind of life changing in a way I can't even describe, which makes me a pretty shit linguistics major.

Maybe I would if I had a keener ear and could hear the beginning lyrics. But just between you and me, this is enough for me... I really love the feeling it gives me. Like I'm on top of the world and going to cry all at once.

I just want to share this song with the world. Maybe in the future when I manage to transcribe all the lyrics I'll have more to put on this page.
