One of my favourite things to photograph is the Australian white ibis. Not to be confused, of course, with the American white ibis.
It is a very common bird here on the coast of Queensland, Australia, and not only is it common... it's large, and it looks like a snide, conniving eunuch advisor, scheming to kill the king...
I imagine this sort of thing very often.
Now, the best thing to do when you are in Brisbane city, especially in Queen Street Mall where they congregate (they love the fountains!) is to throw them some food and watch them race to snap it up. Unlike feeding pigeons, seagulls, magpies or crows, they are so large and their beaks are so long that it's so interesting watching them bicker and squirm!
They raise their bald heads, squawk and shout at each other, flap their majestic wings and attack each other with a swiftness you wouldn't expect! For birds which step around lazily, they sure have some fighting spirit!
Before you can pay attention, the battle is over; they have fought valiantly for their one moment, but somebody has already taken the chip that was thrown.
That's when you throw another and watch them ruffle their feathers yet again. If you don't get told off for feeding the wildlife, you could watch them scramble for scraps forever.
