sozai directory
Sozai are free web materials from Japan. I have quite the collection of links to (living!) sozai sites, in fact I have 43 links in total right now, so I thought making a page dedicated to them with examples of the materials used would be a nice idea.
You can use these, for free, within the terms of service of each site. Be careful to read and compare terms if you're combining materials from several different sites. You should not hotlink anything you want to use. You also generally shouldn't redistribute anything you download, and it's usually against the terms anyway. (That's why seeing Tumblr blogs repost things from these websites when they aren't even dead and forgotten about really peeves me.)
These are almost all linkware, and even if a site says it's OK to use their material without credit, it's just polite to link back to where you got your stuff so that anyone visiting your site can find and use them as well. You're not a rude webmaster, are you...? Do everyone a favour and credit your sources!
Try not to edit any materials unless a site's terms of service says it's OK, too.
Sozaiya 405-Banchi
This is one of the cutest sozai sites around. It's been going since 1999...! I use a lot of these as emoji on my blog myself 
The majority of materials here feature the bear named UGERO-KUMA, who is supposed to be cute and a little bit gross.
Other than the standard materials, they also offer fonts, which I'm using right in this text box. Cute stuff, right?
I like their wedding illustrations but I have no use for them... if I ever find a wife she will have to do with me putting these graphics on some sort of wedding web page
